Practical Quantum Computing in the Cloud

David Mikulin, D-Wave

Nielsen Physics Bldg., Room 307

April 13, 2020

11:00 – 12:00

In the past, quantum computing was largely reserved for researchers, physicists, and scientists with direct access to physical quantum computing systems. But the game has changed, thanks to the cloud. Today, cloud access is allowing programmers around the world to develop and run applications on live quantum computers in real-time. Developers, students, and researchers around the world can now tap into the power of a quantum via their browser. Users and private companies have already built over 200 early applications on D-Wave’s computers in industries ranging from automotive to machine learning, aerospace, finance, and beyond.

In this seminar, I will present how programmers can use D-Wave’s growing cloud-based Leap quantum application environment and open source Ocean SDK to build and run their own quantum applications on a live D-Wave quantum computer in real-time. I will give a live demonstration of Leap – including the powerful new Leap 2 features recently launched, D-Wave’s new hybrid solver and the Ocean SDK. I will also explore some of the early applications that developers and companies have built to date.

David Mikulin is the Director, Systems Software at D-Wave, responsible for the Leap quantum application environment as well as the public APIs that give D-Wave customers real-time cloud access to the company’s quantum processors. While at D-Wave, David led the Systems Software team’s development efforts for the original Leap launch in October 2018 and the recent Leap 2 launch in February, 2020. David has  over 26 years of experience in the software industry and 20 years managing software teams. Prior to working at D-Wave, David worked at several other technology companies including Wind River Systems, Nortel Networks, NovAtel GPS, and MineSense Technologies Ltd.
